Department of Informatics
Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Language Technology

Position as postdoctoral research fellow (SKO 1352) available at Department of Informatics

Department of informatics invites applications for one postdoctoral fellowship in Language Technology. The initial fellowship period is for 30 months. While the primary responsibility of this position is project-based research, some teaching or supervision duties may be arranged by mutual agreement. The starting date should be no later than August 2013. No one can be appointed for more than one specified period at the same institution.

Job description:

The Language Technology Group (LTG) at IFI has its focus in hybrid approaches to Natural Language Processing (NLP), with emphasis on the interplay of grammar, statistics, and semantics. The ideal candidate will have some competency in both rule-based and statistical methods within Computational Linguistics, as well as an understanding of the use of these methods in core NLP tasks like tagging, parsing, information extraction, sentiment analysis, or others. Such a hybrid background will be a strong plus, but not an absolute requirement. The group pursues a predominantly applied research agenda, hence solid implementation experience and general technical CS competencies are desirable for this position.

The projects funding this fellowship in part build on existing resources, in particular drawing from the DELPH-IN open-source repository, and on common toolkits for data-driven dependency parsing, for English, French, German, Norwegian, and other languages. Some prior experience within the relevant frameworks or familiarity with some of the software involved would be especially welcome; as would be experience in designing complex NLP architectures or use of highperformance computing for NLP. Research at UiO will not target a single specific language, hence proficiency in Norwegian is not a prerequisite. For further background, please see:
