The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics. The Department has near 850 students on bachelor level, near 430 master students, and over 220 PhD students. The overall staff of the Department is close to 270 employees, about 200 of these are full time positions. The full time scientific staff is 60, mostly Full/Associate Professors.

PhD Research Fellow in Language Technology

A position as PhD Research Fellow in Language Technology is available at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo.

The fellowship is for a period of 4 years (containing 25% teaching obligations). The starting date should be no later than October 1, 2014.

Job Description

The position is hosted at the IFI Research Group in Language Technology (LTG). For background on the research environment, please see.

The LTG research group has its specialization in hybrid approaches to Natural Language Processing, with emphasis on the interplay of grammar, semantics, and data-driven approaches.  The ideal candidate will have an interest in linguistically informed approaches to syntactic and semantic analysis, and have a strong inter-disciplinary background.  An interest in linguistic theory is a plus.  The group pursues a predominantly applied research agenda, hence at least a minimal level of implementation experience is desirable for this position.

Applicants should submit a statement of research interests or a project outline for the qualifying work during the PhD program, but it is expected that the successful candidate will ultimately define their project jointly with their supervisors during the first two months of the fellowship.  The fellowship will have at least two supervisors, typically drawn from the scientific staff at LTG. The application letter should discuss at least one candidate research topic of interest to the candidate, including a brief reflection about the scientific issues involved and the possible choice of theory and method(s).  This statement of research purpose should not exceed two pages.

Requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computational Linguistics or Computer Science (with a specialization relevant to Language Technology).

The fellowship requires admission to the research training program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline (made out in cooperation with the appropriate PhD advisors), must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission is to be approved within three months. Salary:

Position code 1017, Pay grade: 50 - 57 (NOK 421 000 – 473 400 per year)
